Air pollution affects both human health and buildings, in particular in cities where architectural and cultural tourism is essential. Libelium has the solution, Smart Spot, to help specialists and urban planners make informed decisions, considering sustainability, climate change and air quality criteria.

Proposed solution: 

• Creation of an interactive viewer to monitor the degradation of facades in emblematic buildings, equipped with real-time analysis.
• Use of sensors to measure NO2, O3, SO2, CO as well as other factors, in addition to meteorological conditions such as temperature, humidity and rainfall.
• Collection of air pollution data to be incorporated into an artificial intelligence algorithm, helping to make heritage conservation decisions, including the application of special coatings or limiting the number of visitors.

Data integration and analysis:

• Data is integrated using other open source sets, such as the Copernicus program, to obtain a wider view of the environmental situation.
• Smart Spot Air measures different pollutants and weather conditions in real time. Sensors are calibrated and validated in a high precision laboratory.
• A software solution adapted to each case is offered, with data integration in the Cloud to create control panels.

Outputs of the project:

• Protection of cultural and historical heritage in addition to promotion of tourism sustainability.
• Facilitated management of restoration works given the availability of accurate data.
• Greater control and security over data given the ease of implementation and scalability.
• Customised data visualisation for more efficient analysis and decision making.
• Variety of connectivity options such as WiFi, 4G, GSM-GPRS and NB-IoT.

This project, launched in Europe, can be replicated in other cities, placing an emphasis on the importance of the data economy in informed decision-making and heritage conservation.
